Did you ever go to the Mass and hear someone announce the theme of the Mass?  ‘The theme of this Mass is talents.’  ‘The theme of this Mass is friendship.’  ‘The theme of this Mass is springtime.’  ‘The theme of this Mass is love.’  The list goes on.  ‘The theme of this Mass is ____________ (fill in the blank).’

One of my professors when I studied liturgy said, “I will repeat this three times.  The theme of every Mass is the Paschal Mystery.  The theme of every Mass is the Paschal Mystery.  The theme of every Mass is the Paschal Mystery.”  Those words are what come to mind every time I hear a well-meaning person announce the theme of the Mass.

The theme of every Mass is the Paschal Mystery; that is, the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  At Mass, we praise God and we thank God for God’s gifts.  We thank God for the gift of creation and the gift of Jesus Christ.  We pray for one another and we ask for God’s help.  We eat and drink of the Body and Blood of Christ.  Our (venial) sin is forgiven and we are strengthened for life’s journey.  We go out into the world to live the gospel and through our lives let others know about Jesus.

Are talents, friendship, springtime, love and all those other things important?  Absolutely!  The question for planners, presiders, homilists and everyone present is, “Where do they fit in the Paschal Mystery of Jesus Christ?”
