There is a great deal of planning and preparing for most weddings.  Before setting an exact date and getting the reception facility, booking the band or D.J., the photographer, printing invitations, etc., call your parish and set up a meeting with the priest.

The Catholic Archdiocese of Edmonton says:  "The formal preparation for marriage is to begin at least twelve months prior to the anticipated dates of the wedding (Policy No. 703).  Why at least twelve months?  The intent of the policy is as follows:  "If both parties are free to marry, this time period will be sufficient to allow for all other pre-marriage requirements to be met."

While some parishes states that at least six months is sufficient, I think that there is merit in the twelve month principle.

Best wishes for a long and happy married life,

Fr. Leo
